I t is In a cafe in Wimbledon, south London, three young Asian men are deep in conversation. The Conservative victory of a few months earlier has left them dejected; the anti-Nazi demonstrations, the involvement with Rock Against Racism, the rallies against the National Front — none of it prevented the Tories from getting in. This is not a good time to be Asian, and things are, the men fear, about to get much worse. Margaret Thatcher , the new prime minister, has already voiced concerns, in a television interview the previous year, that "people are really rather afraid that this country might be rather swamped by people with a different culture". The men are frustrated and impatient; protest has not worked, so what is left? Punk , that's what.
There's nothing better than getting drunk and making your ears bleed with Japanese punk.

It didn't take long to realise this on my first visit to the country. There was beautiful music and wild, atmospheric sounds wherever we went. The individual jingle that rang out through each train station as we moved on to the next stop. The 60s soul classics that pump out of vintage sound systems in the country's countless cool bars. Since I already ran you through that first one, I figured there was no harm in sharing some stuff about my other dependable, go-to mood-lifter. Japan's punk scene has been around for just as long as Vivienne Westwood's been capitalising on every aspect of the original King's Road punk set literally since the day it started , but Western coverage of the pre-Harajuku stuff has been pretty much nonexistent for whatever reason. Largely missing out on burgeoning alternative music scenes after the Second World War, Japanese youth finally had something to rage against in the mids — industrial decline and major price inflation during the world oil crisis — so Japanese punk was born. Here are some of the Japanese punk bands you've probably missed out on by being a close-minded, Western segregationist. Besides having the second best band name in the history of the world ' Paracoccidioidomicosisproctitissarcomucosis ' takes first place; shit music, hilarious trolling of self-serious grindcore fans , The Stalin were one of the very first Japanese hardcore bands, and one of the few to achieve a lasting cult status over the years. Frontman Michiro Edo did everything a hardcore frontman should do: projectile vomiting, self-mutilation, the later formation of an acoustic punk band who utilise harmonicas way too much, etc. Like many other early, Tokyo-based punk bands, the guys in Friction are essentially direct clones of their New York and London counterparts, minus that effortless, apathetic thing Richard Hell did so well. I don't understand a word of what they're saying in this interview, but the song kicks enough ass for that to not really matter.
