Crack cocaine is the crystal form of cocaine, which normally comes in a powder form. Crack is heated and smoked. It is so named because it makes a cracking or popping sound when heated. Crack, the most potent form in which cocaine appears, is also the riskiest. Smoking crack allows it to reach the brain more quickly and thus brings an intense and immediate—but very short-lived—high that lasts about fifteen minutes. And because addiction can develop even more rapidly if the substance is smoked rather than snorted taken in through the nose , an abuser can become addicted after his or her first time trying crack. The truth is that once a person is addicted, the expense skyrockets in direct ratio to the increasing amount needed to support the habit. Crack cocaine , also known simply as crack or rock , is a free base form of cocaine that can be smoked. Crack offers a short, intense high to smokers. In purer forms, crack rocks appear as off-white nuggets with jagged edges, with a slightly higher density than candle wax. Purer forms of crack resemble a hard plastic in crystalline form, which is brittle. Crack cocaine as sold on the streets may be adulterated or "cut" with other substances mimicking the appearance of crack cocaine to increase bulk. Use of toxic adulterants such as levamisole has been documented. Sodium bicarbonate NaHCO 3 , common baking soda is a base used in preparation of crack, although other weak bases may substitute for it.
Understanding Crack Cocaine
Metrics details. People who smoke crack cocaine experience a wide variety of health-related issues. However, public health programming designed for this population is limited, particularly in comparison with programming for people who inject drugs. Canadian best practice recommendations encourage needle and syringe programs NSPs to provide education about safer crack cocaine smoking practices, distribute safer smoking equipment, and provide options for safer disposal of used equipment. We conducted an online survey of NSP managers across Canada to estimate the proportions of NSPs that provide education and distribute safer smoking equipment to people who smoke crack cocaine.
People who smoke crack cocaine are at risk of acquiring HIV, hepatitis C and hepatitis B from the physical injuries caused by smoking crack, and also through condomless sex. In this article, we address the new evidence-based recommendations for distribution of safer crack cocaine smoking equipment. Crack cocaine is a stimulant that has been converted from powder cocaine into a rock crystal. When the rock crystal is heated to a high temperature, it melts and quickly vapourizes, and can be inhaled "smoked". It produces a short but intense high. Crack is also ranked highly in terms of the harms physical, dependence and social associated with its use.
