Jade Montserrat: Instituting Care
She works in painting, drawing, film, performance, installation, sculpture, text and print. Much of her work focuses on the entertainer and civil-rights activist Josephine Baker , whose story represents the intersection of gender, race, class and celebrity culture that fascinates Montserrat. By doing so, she explores racist stereotypes, the status of the Black body and how Baker was able to capitalise on these elements to become the most famous Black entertainer of her time. It evokes the uncomfortable question of whether she is a willing participant or being coerced and relates to the racial and gendered dynamics of the performance. In , Montserrat was commissioned by Art on the Underground to produce a new design for the tube map cover and a series of posters.
Jade Montserrat is a research-led artist and writer based in Scarborough, UK. She makes visual and live artworks that explore race and the vulnerabilities of bodies, the tactile and sensory qualities of language and challenge the structures of care in institutions. Recent selected screenings, performances and presentations include: Arnolfini, and Spike Island, Bristol , Alison Jacques Gallery and Princeton University

I admit it is sometimes depressing going to bed without him and getting up seeing him still studying but I am sure we will survive this.
